As my first resin project, this 8-inch spalted apple and electric blue resin bowl holds a special place in my personal collection. Sized for an office desk, console table, or open bookshelf, the vibrant sapphire resin creates an immediate jewel-like focal point.
The electric blue mica shifts between turquoise and deep ocean blue under changing light, while the warm apple wood grounds the piece in natural texture.
Wood, shape, and finish
The wooden element began as a salvaged apple wood block with natural voids and spalted inclusions that would have been unviable for a traditional wooden bowl. Casting the block in deep blue resin pigmented with Eye Candy Blue Orchid mica turned raw voids into dynamic fluid ribbons wrapping around the turned form.
Turning and sanding a hybrid resin-and-wood block requires progressive abrasives up to high grits to ensure full transparency and high gloss across the resin sections.
The piece is sealed with multiple coats of Waterlox Original gloss finish, enhancing color depth and protecting the wood fibers. Designed for dry display, care requires simple wiping with a soft cloth.
