Cherry Bowl — 9-Inch Everyday Table Form

A hand-turned 9-inch cherry bowl with a clean rounded rim, warm grain, and a food-safe polymerized tung oil finish.

In the home

Some bowls live on display shelves, but I turned this one specifically for daily work. At 9 inches across and 3.5 inches deep, it sits right in that sweet spot for everyday kitchen use—holding a dozen apples on the island, serving warm rolls at the dinner table, or catching keys and pocket change by the front door.

The form is straightforward: a smoothly rounded rim, a full open curve, and a small, stable foot underneath. It feels substantial in the hand without being heavy or clumsy, making it easy to carry around with one hand. There is no bark edge or wild figure competing for attention here—just clean proportions and a comfortable, useful shape.

Wood, shape, and finish

Cherry is hard to beat for an everyday bowl. It turns cleanly under the gouge, takes a soft edge nicely, and has a fine, quiet grain structure that feels smooth to the touch. Right now, the wood shows a fresh, warm reddish-brown hue. As it sits on your counter and catches natural daylight over the coming months, the tannins in the wood will naturally react, deepening the color into a rich, golden amber patina.

I kept the bowl walls slightly open rather than undercut, making it easy to reach inside and scoop out whatever is stored there. The rim has enough thickness to take a small bump without chipping, and the wall weight gives the piece a grounded feel on a countertop or dining table.

To protect the wood while preserving its natural texture, I finished it with polymerized tung oil. Once fully cured, tung oil bonds deep inside the wood fibers rather than building up a plastic-like film on the surface. That leaves the cherry feeling like actual wood while making it completely food-safe for dry or light serving use.

Taking care of it takes very little effort. After serving bread or fruit, simply wipe it clean with a damp cloth or give it a brief rinse, then wipe it dry right away. Keep it out of standing water and away from the dishwasher, and the finish will stay smooth for years.
