Every angle of this 10-inch natural edge bowl reveals a different silhouette. From the front, opposing sides arch into broad, craggy wings. From an angled view, the dark, textured bark reveals rugged ridges and dips that catch changing room light throughout the day.

At 10 inches wide and 5 inches high, it has the visual scale to anchor a dining room table, kitchen island, or fireplace mantel. It functions well as a dry fruit server or decorative centerpiece, but it commands equal attention displayed empty so the interior concentric grain remains visible.

Wood, shape, and finish

The contrast between the pale, smooth interior of hard maple and the dark, textured bark rim defines this turning. Unlike turned pieces with smooth, man-made rims, this bowl retains the exact outer bark profile of the original tree section. Preserving that bark across the high wings required light cuts with razor-sharp gouges to prevent tear-out.

I kept the outer wall profile simple, sweeping cleanly from a stable base up to the undulating rim. Adding turned details to the wall would have cluttered the design—the natural bark line already provides all the visual character the piece needs.

The bowl is finished with Osmo PolyX hardwax oil. PolyX warms the light maple without adding a plastic sheen, protecting the wood fibers while leaving a smooth satin feel. Care is easy: wipe with a damp cloth and dry promptly, avoiding standing water and harsh detergents.
