Natural Edge Maple Bowl — Smooth Winged Form

While this bowl spans 9 inches across, its 6-inch height is what commands immediate attention. Both sides of the rim sweep dramatically upward into tall, smooth wings, giving the vessel an elegant, elevated silhouette.

Because the dramatic side profile is a key feature of the design, this piece belongs where it can be appreciated from eye level—on an open shelf, fireplace mantel, sideboard, or entryway console. Its pale interior grain and subtle bark line work beautifully when displayed unadorned.

Wood, shape, and finish

The pale, creamy color of hard maple highlights every line of this winged form. Soft growth rings circle the deep interior cavity, while the rim follows the natural contour of the outer log. During turning, small portions of the outer bark naturally sloughed away, exposing smooth, burnished wood edges that contrast softly with the dark bark sections that remained.

I intentionally elevated the form on a small, recessed foot underneath. Raising the base slightly gives the sweeping wings a weightless quality, preventing the bowl from feeling heavy on a table. The walls were turned thin enough to maintain crisp, clean rim lines while preserving structural strength.

The bowl is sealed and finished with Osmo PolyX hardwax oil. PolyX warms the light maple tones without yellowing, leaving a durable, smooth satin finish that is food-safe for dry display items or fruit. Care requires nothing more than wiping with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
