Natural Edge Walnut Bowl — Deep Wide Bark-Rim Form

A deep natural edge walnut bowl with intact bark around the rim, a wide 10.5-inch form, and an Osmo PolyX finish.

In the home

At 10.5 inches wide and 5.5 inches tall, this deep natural edge bowl carries real presence. Its sweeping bark line rises and dips naturally, so it looks best in a spot where you can take in the profile from the side—centered on a dining table, kitchen island, or open entryway console.

The rim retains the rough, natural outer bark of the tree log. Immediately below the bark lies a creamy golden band of sapwood that transitions dramatically into the dark chocolate heartwood inside. It has generous interior capacity for holding fruit or dry table displays, though the piece stands out just as strongly empty as a centerpiece.

Wood, shape, and finish

Turning a natural edge bowl means following the natural curvature of the log blank. The rim’s undulating high wings and low dips were shaped entirely by the original tree’s geometry. Keeping the bark intact throughout turning and sanding requires patience, sharp gouges, and careful tool presentation, as natural bark can easily catch or tear off during the cut. I was fortunate that all of the bark stayed intact.

I balanced the wall thickness to keep the high bark wings sturdy without making the bowl feel heavy. The interior curve sweeps cleanly into a smooth bottom, highlighting the rich contrast between the pale sapwood band and the deep walnut heartwood.

The piece is finished with Osmo PolyX, a food-safe hardwax oil blend. PolyX penetrates the wood fibers to bring out the grain depth while leaving a smooth, low-sheen satin finish. It stabilizes the bark rim without coating it in a glossy plastic shell. For care, simply dust with a soft cloth or wipe lightly with a damp cloth when needed, avoiding dishwashers or soaking water.
