In the Home
This is the smaller spalted maple bowl in the current group: 7 inches wide and 3.5 inches tall, with the same kind of dark natural zone lines as the larger statement bowl, but in a more compact footprint.
That size changes how it lives in a room. It does not need the center of a dining table. It can sit on an entry console, a nightstand, a side table, a desk, or a shelf where the pattern can be seen up close. It has enough contrast to feel special, but it is easier to place than a larger centerpiece.
The Wood and Form
Spalted maple is never predictable. The dark lines are natural fungal boundaries that formed in the wood before I ever put it on the lathe. Some pieces have faint, smoky figure. This one has stronger graphic movement: pale maple broken up by black zone lines and warmer patches of color.
The form is simple on purpose. With spalted maple, the wood already has a lot to say. A quiet bowl shape gives the eye somewhere to rest while still letting the figure wrap around the sides and continue into the interior.
Design & Finish
This bowl is scaled for smaller spaces: the kind of handmade object that can become part of a room without taking it over. It could hold small wrapped candies, keys, jewelry, or keepsakes, but it also works empty as a decorative piece.
The finish is a natural oil finish that warms the maple and makes the zone lines stand out without building a plastic-looking surface. That matters with spalted wood. The best part is the depth and irregularity in the material, so the finish should make the wood clearer, not louder.
Why This One Is Different
Compared with the larger spalted maple bowl, this piece feels more intimate. The bigger one reads as a centerpiece. This one reads more like an accent object: easier to gift, easier to place, and easier to pick up and look at closely.
That makes it a good fit for someone who likes dramatic natural figure but does not want an oversized bowl. It is still a one-of-a-kind spalted maple piece, just scaled for everyday spaces.
Commission Notes
This bowl is currently available through Finder’s Keepers Corner. A similar piece could also be commissioned if you like compact bowls with strong natural figure, especially in maple, birch, or other woods that can show spalting.
