Small Spalted Maple Bowl — Compact Zone-Line Table Piece

A small hand-turned spalted maple bowl with black zone lines, warm natural figure, and a compact 7-inch form for a shelf or table.

In the home

At 7 inches wide and 3.5 inches tall, this compact spalted maple bowl brings graphic natural figure into smaller everyday spaces. Unlike large centerpiece bowls that demand the main dining table or island, this versatile piece fits comfortably on a bookshelf, nightstand, entryway console, office desk, or side table.

Its intimate scale makes it an ideal catch-all for jewelry, keys, or wrapped candy, as well as a thoughtful one-of-a-kind gift. Left empty, the dramatic black zone lines wrapping over the rim invite close inspection.

Wood, shape, and finish

Spalted maple is shaped by natural forest fungi as fallen timber cures. The striking black lines mark fungal colony boundaries within the wood. In this piece, intense black lines contrast against pale golden maple heartwood, creating an organic pattern across both the interior cavity and exterior walls.

The bowl features a clean, simple rounded wall profile with a smooth rim and small recessed foot. By avoiding decorative grooves or turned beads, the geometry gives full prominence to the natural spalting figure.

Finished with polymerized tung oil, the finish penetrates deep into the wood fibers to protect the surface while leaving a tactile, warm satin feel. The cured finish is food-safe for dry items. For care, simply wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry promptly, avoiding standing water and dishwashers.

This piece is available in person at Finder’s Keepers Corner in Berea, Ohio.
