Spalted Maple Bowl — Bold Zone Lines, Mineral Staining, and a 10-Inch Wide Form

Some bowls announce themselves quietly. This one earns a second look every time.

The wide, low profile draws your eye across the full expanse of the wood — and there is a lot to take in. Bold black zone lines sweep across the grain in broad arcs, the result of fungal activity that happened long before this piece ever touched a lathe. Between the lines, the wood shifts from creamy white to warm golden-tan, with patches of brown mineral staining that deepen the contrast. No two sections read the same.

The Story Behind This Piece

Spalted soft maple is some of the most visually dynamic wood I work with. The spalting process — where fungi begin breaking down the wood’s cell walls before being halted by drying — leaves behind those signature zone lines: the fungus’s territorial boundaries, frozen in place. On this blank, the lines ran wide and confident across the face, so the design decision was simple: let the wood dictate the form, keep the profile clean, and stay out of the way.

The blank came to the lathe with the zone lines running roughly parallel to the rim, which meant they’d show across the full interior and exterior as the bowl opened up. That’s exactly what happened. The heavy mineral staining in the heartwood adds a secondary layer of color — amber and rust tones that play off the white sapwood without competing with the zone lines.

Design & Finish

The form is wide and shallow — 10 inches across with a 4.5-inch rise — which suits a piece this visually active. A taller form would fight the grain; the low profile lets the figure breathe and makes the bowl as comfortable on a shelf as it is on a table.

The foot is turned clean and proportional to the rim, giving the piece a stable base without drawing attention away from the wood above it. The wall thickness is consistent throughout, the rim is slightly rounded to the touch, and the interior finish is as smooth as the exterior.

The finish saturates and protects the grain while staying close to the wood’s natural color — you’re seeing the maple, not the finish.
