14-Inch Spalted Maple Wide-Rim Bowl — Bold Fungal Zone Lines & Natural Figure

Measuring a generous 14 inches in diameter, this spalted maple bowl is crafted to serve as a visual anchor in a room. Its low, shallow basin and broad flat rim give it an architectural presence, making it an ideal centerpiece for a dining room table, kitchen island, or large entryway console.

The wide gallery rim frames the interior basin like a canvas, catching light across its warm golden grain and dark ink-like line work. Designed for dry display or as a catch-all for mail and decorative accents, its scale and organic patterns bring warmth and tactile character to any interior space.

The wood and form

Turned from a piece of locally salvaged Ohio silver maple, this bowl highlights the remarkable artistry of natural spalting. Fungal zone lines wander organically through the timber, creating sharp black borders between cream, straw, and honey-toned wood fibers.

Rather than turning a steep, deep vessel, I designed this piece with a shallow basin and an extended horizontal rim. This form maximizes the surface area of spalted figure visible from above and at eye level when sitting at a table. The sweeping curves of the interior basin transition smoothly into the wide rim, creating a harmonious balance between structure and natural grain movement.

Design & finish

Turning spalted timber of this size requires careful tool technique to achieve clean cuts across areas of varying grain density. Penetrating epoxy was used to stabilize the fragile wood that was damaged by the spalting process. The piece was hollowed on the lathe, sanded through progressive grits to preserve subtle natural checks and intricate figure details, and then sealed.

The bowl is sealed with de-waxed shellac to harden the porous spalted grain and lock in the intricate black zone lines, then finished with hand-buffed carnauba wax. The shellac illuminates the warm amber tones of the maple while the hard carnauba wax produces a smooth, durable luster.
