Walnut Bowl — Flared Shellac and Wax Form
A hand-turned walnut bowl with a flared 9.5-inch form, warm dark grain, and a shellac and wax finish.
In the home
Sitting broad and low, this bowl spans 9.5 inches across with a gentle 2.5-inch rise. The shallow, open silhouette gives it a light presence on a surface, almost like a shallow pedestal tray. A small, neatly turned foot beneath lifts the outer rim slightly off the tabletop, casting a subtle shadow line around the base.
It makes an exceptional entry console catch-all for keys and mail, a coffee table accent, or a dry serving dish for wrapped treats or decorative items. Left unadorned, the expansive interior displays the natural grain movement across the wide walnut face.
Wood, shape, and finish
The geometry of a flared bowl displays grain figure that deeper bowl walls often hide. Turning the walls outward at a wide angle reveals a swirling, feathered heartwood grain pattern across the bottom. I kept the rim thin and crisp without adding extra decorative grooves or beads, letting the rich color of the walnut carry the visual interest.
I finished the piece with thin layers of de-waxed shellac followed by microcrystalline wax. Shellac seals the dense grain while highlighting the warm chocolate and amber undertones of the walnut. Buffing with wax creates a silky, soft-luster sheen that enhances the tactile feel of the hand-turned wood.
Because shellac is a traditional spirit-based finish, this piece is intended for dry display or dry catch-all use rather than wet foods or liquid contact. For care, simply dust with a microfiber cloth or wipe gently with a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately.
