Custom work

A custom piece should feel like it belongs in the room.

Commissions are best when there is a clear place, occasion, or feeling behind the request. I take a limited number so each piece has room for material selection, careful turning, and a finish that suits how it will be used.

Statement bowls

A one-of-a-kind bowl sized for a dining table, console, entry table, or shelf where the grain can anchor the room.

Decorative vessels

Hollow forms and tabletop vessels for buyers who want sculptural wood, dramatic figure, or a modern ebonized finish.

Meaningful gifts

Anniversary, housewarming, holiday, or milestone pieces made with a specific wood, size, finish, or story in mind.

Process

What happens after you reach out

The first conversation is practical: where the piece will live, what size feels right, whether it needs to be food-safe, and what budget range makes sense.

Share the setting

Tell me where the piece will live, how it will be used, and any colors, woods, or forms you are drawn to.

Choose direction

We narrow the size, species, finish, and budget range before I begin. If I have a suitable blank in the shop, I will show it first.

Make and finish

Most commissions take about 4-8 weeks depending on size, drying, finish cure time, and current shop capacity.

Approve and ship

I share finished photos before pickup or shipment. Pieces ship from Northeast Ohio, with U.S. shipping available for most work.

FAQ

Commission questions

A few answers that help turn a rough idea into a realistic custom piece.

What can I commission?

Most requests are for hand-turned bowls, decorative vessels, tabletop centerpieces, and special gifts. If the idea fits my tools, materials, and style, I am happy to talk through it.

How much does a custom piece cost?

Pricing depends on size, wood species, figure, finish, and complexity. Smaller pieces may be a few hundred dollars, while larger statement bowls, figured blanks, resin-based work, or complex finishes can cost more. Share your budget range in the form and I will steer the design honestly.

How long does a commission take?

Plan on roughly 4-8 weeks for most custom work. Some pieces move faster if the dry blank is already available; others take longer if the wood needs extra drying time or a slow-curing finish.

Can I choose the wood and finish?

Yes. Cherry, maple, walnut, ash, cedar, and spalted or figured woods all have different personalities. I can also help choose a food-safe finish for functional pieces or a more dramatic decorative finish for display work.

Do you make food-safe bowls?

Yes. If the piece is meant for fruit, bread, salad, or everyday serving, I will use a food-contact-appropriate finish and explain the care routine before it leaves the shop.
